Childhood and escape
Jamal Qaiser was born in Rawalpindi (Pakistan) in 1972, as the second of three children. His family is from the Ahmadiyya community, who are regarded as the "Enlightened Muslims" in the West but face strong hostility in the Muslim world. In 1980, the family had to flee Pakistan because they faced increasing persecution by the government and in society for their religious beliefs.
Once he arrived in Germany, eight-year-old Jamal experienced that migrant families from Pakistan were not very welcome and that, for example, no German courses were offered for pupils in the third grade. He did not start learning German until the seventh grade. He left school with a Certificate of Extended Vocational Education, and, nevertheless, passed his later post-graduate studies with flying colours.
Business career
Jamal Qaiser made his way from teenage market trader to investor and CEO of his private equity firm. From 1993 to 2006, he was initially the Managing Director of his company Qaiser Mode GmbH. As this business expanded, he worked with major international clients such as Walmart, New Yorker, Karl Vögele AG and Intersport. In 2006, he founded Qaiser Equity Investments, which has since been successful as a developer of housing properties and incubator of innovative companies. The creation of affordable housing and the promotion of young businesses are hallowed goals.
Academic career
In 2010 he started the Advance Management Diploma (post-graduate studies) at the Globe Business College in Munich. In 2013, he began studying "Owner/President Management" at the renowned Harvard Business School, which he successfully completed in 2016. While at Harvard Business School, he completed the Transition to Leadership Programme at the University of Oxford Said Business School in 2014.
The United Nations
In a contribution from UN circles, he was once characterised as follows: "Jamal Qaiser is an extremely bright mind with a clear sense of mission for justice and humanity. He clearly enjoys actively advising people and organisations to bring about positive development. Moreover, he is characterised by determination and is committed to promoting international understanding."
