Pope Leo XIV
Congratulations to His Holiness Pope Leo XIV

Statement by Buddhi Athauda on the Appointment of His Holiness Pope Leo XIV

I extend my heartfelt congratulations to His Holiness Pope Leo XIV, born Robert Francis Prevost, on his election as the 267th Pontiff of the Roman Catholic Church. His appointment marks a historic moment for the global Catholic community and for the world, as he becomes the first American-born Pope to ascend to the Holy See.

Pope Leo XIV brings to the papacy a deep well of spiritual wisdom, shaped by a lifetime of service across continents. A native of Chicago, he was educated at Villanova University and later earned advanced degrees in theology and canon law from institutions in Rome. He served as the head of the Order of Saint Augustine and was later appointed bishop of Chiclayo in northern Peru, where he spent years living among and ministering to diverse and often underserved communities. His experience in South America brought him face-to-face with the realities of poverty, displacement, and resilience – and shaped his message of inclusive faith, social justice, and pastoral care.

As he steps into this sacred role, I call upon all religious communities around the world to unite behind the values of compassion, cultural respect, and religious tolerance. The global stage today is fraught with rising extremism—from both the far right and the far left. In such times, we must reaffirm our commitment to dialogue, coexistence, and the dignity of all human beings, regardless of creed, culture, or nation.

May His Holiness Pope Leo XIV lead with humility, courage, and grace as he steers the Catholic Church through a new era of engagement with the modern world. I join millions of people of faith and goodwill in praying for his leadership and for a world rooted in peace, mutual respect, and shared humanity.
