Diplomatic Council Side Event: “Combating poverty through Educational Justice, Women Empowerment and Free and Fair Trade"

Feb. 6, 2018, 11:45 am - 1:00 pm, Room D, United Nations Headquarters New York

The Diplomatic Council sparks inspiration and ignites world-changing collaborations. Our mission is to be a global catalyst for unprecedented human unity, progress, and fulfillment. We raise our voice for humanity, good sense, and wisdom. Most importantly, we truly believe that economic diplomacy provides a solid foundation for international understanding. Our membership unites established leaders and elevates the world through entrepreneurship, social impact and policy as Diplomacy helps business and vice versa.

Educational sponsorship to end poverty

Education is the foundation for a better life. It gives people a fair chance to get employment, to escape poverty, to support their families, and to develop their communities. The Diplomatic Council has launched a program called “Diplomatic Council Educational Sponsorship“ encouraging its members to become godparents and finance studies for poor adolescents, mainly orphans, in underdeveloped countries. For this purpose, we first seek members and friends within our organization, obtain their commitment and then collaborate with orphanages/organizations to find orphans who have the potential to complete a vocational training or a study.

Educational justice through quality learning

Educational justice is key for providing equal chances in life,  in particular for those in developing countries.  Many examples show that education makes a huge difference to poverty and women’s rights. Often educational justice is equated with educational equality. The assumption is that educational justice is achieved whenever all students are granted the opportunity to learn the same things. Unfortunately, this is not the case as it ignores learners‘ skills, circumstances, and interests. This again leads to content dominating our institutionalized learning in both schools and universities. Instead of giving every learner the content he or she needs in order to succeed, the same content is provided for everyone regardless of prior knowledge and/or interests. The ideal solution would be that students‘ learning goals define the learning and teaching process. The satisfaction of individuals achieving those goals has the potential to make students happier and to keep them motivated.  For the purpose of achieving the goal of more individualized learning, Qualityminds has created the e-QualityLearning platform designed to support the learning goals of the student by offering suitable content combined with different learning methods.

Women empowerment

Domestic violence affects many women and children. In very serious cases, these women have to flee with their children to escape their violent husbands and prevent being killed. Not knowing where to turn to, since domestic violence is still a subject often ignored by society, these women and their children become homeless as a consequence. Homelessness again is the beginning of poverty. The non-profit Luz Maria Foundation raises public awareness on domestic violence of women and children through the distribution of pamphlets and other materials at community events, via social media, and through facilitating programs and seminars. It assists the victims by sponsoring empowerment and self-esteem related programs and directs them to established shelters and other places of protection so they can escape homelessness and poverty.

Fair and free trade

Freedom and fairness are among the most precious values the human race has and yet they are violated all over the world. Restrictions on freedom take place in the event of a fence being built around a country limiting the freedom of travel for the population. Freedom is also lost whenever the free flow of good and services is restricted. Already in the 18th century, Adam Smith has detailed in his book “The Wealth of Nations“ that economic isolation and protectionism causes damages to the countries, in particular to the population. More than 200 years ago, economist David Ricardo has already proven that a free foreign trade is advantageous for all economies. Trade is essential for sustainable economic growth and prosperity. It increases employment and improves the working conditions. The poorest countries in Africa and Asia are struggling with the effects of high under-employment and poverty. Hence, a free and fair trade is vital because a flourishing economy and the well-being of the population leads to more peace and stability and helps reducing crisis and wars.
