How Diplomatic Council Member Consteeld helped after the Chernobyl nuclear disaster
By Bartosz Marciszewski, CEO Consteel Electronics
After the Chernobyl nuclear disaster in 1986 many efforts have been made to secure the damaged reactor and mitigate environmental and health impacts. The immediate response was the construction of a "sarcophagus", officially known as the Chernobyl Shelter Structure or Shelter Facility. Over the years, modernization and protection of the environment against explosion remnants has been one of the world's priorities.
In order to protect the environment and to give priority to the elimination of the consequences of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant explosion, Consteel Electronics has started cooperation with leading construction companies of the Novarka Joint Venture consortium to begin construction and modernization of the sarcophagus. The aim is to increase the safety of the sarcophagus for years to come, so that the remnants of the explosion do not negatively affect the environment and pose a threat to people.
Consteel was leading the electrical work at Chernobyl construction
For almost two years, Consteel Electronics, a member of the Diplomatic Council, has been leading the electrical works at the facility. The structure was built thanks to the support of over 40 countries around the world, including Poland. The project was implemented under the financial supervision of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, which provided 1.5 billion euros.
Working on the construction of the largest mobile structure in the world, an ark designed to protect the remains of the explosion for the next hundred years required us to perform among others: wiring circuit breakers (630 VAC), assembling, installing and connecting devices, e.g. power distribution unit, local power control device, motors, motor starters, junction boxes, lighting systems and commissioning. We solved current difficulties to identify problems and cooperated with the best in the world.
It was a very important challenge for us, which we accepted with excitement and willingness. We gained experience in very difficult terrain, where not everyone has access. Our work has been appreciated and now we are looking forward to carry out more projects of this type in order to spread our professionalism in the field of low and medium voltage installations.
